A bronze automatic that is meant to darken, soften and become yours.

Most watches are sold as pristine objects. Coromandel Watch Co.’s Tanjore Edition Bronze is sold as a work in progress: a 39 mm bronze case that begins to patinate from the moment it is assembled.
This is a new take on a name the brand already used. The first Tanjore Edition, released earlier, was a steel automatic on a Seiko NH35 movement with a rubber strap, in red and blue dual-tone dials. The Bronze version changes the case, the crystal, the movement and the strap.
The design borrows from two places. The embossed dial shows two sailing vessels and a nautical compass at six o’clock, a nod to the Coromandel Coast’s seafaring past, while the caseback is engraved with the Brihadeeshwara Temple of Tanjore. It is the brand’s first watch with a domed sapphire crystal, which adds depth and a vintage look, and the hands and markers carry C3 Super-LumiNova.

Inside is a Miyota 8215 automatic that can also be hand-wound. The brand’s page quotes about 42 hours of power reserve in its text and 40 hours in its specification list, so treat it as roughly 40 to 42. It is water resistant to 100 m with a screw-down crown, and arrives in a handcrafted teak box. Designed and hand assembled in India, with a one-year warranty.
